The Learn & Connect monthly series is all about providing facilitators with practical, immersive learning experiences while fostering connections across the facilitation community.

In our April 2025 session, we are happy to host Dan Newman, Principal and Founder of Matter Group and author of 'From the Front of the Room: Notes on Facilitation for Experienced Practitioners'. This book is about how facilitators interact with participants during large, complex workshops. It is not about agenda design but rather about the behaviours that lead to engagement, insight and tangible outcomes.

Session Description: What do we mean when we talk about complexity? What do complex systems have in common and how does facilitation contribute to helping complex systems adapt to a changing world? We will look at the facilitator’s role as influencing systems rather than as moderator or coach or consultant. The facilitator lies well outside of their client’s world, which brings disadvantages (limited knowledge, no control) and decisive advantages (the clarity of perspective that only outsiders have). How can we put this advantage to work to help our clients drive systems change?
