Association Updates

Facilitation Impact Awards

Reminder for 2020 Nominations:

The Facilitation Impact Awards (FIA) honour organisations that have used facilitation to achieve a measurable and positive impact, as well as the facilitator(s) they’ve worked with. As we head into a new year, now is a great time to reflect on your facilitation-related successes and the contributions you’ve made to either your team or to your clients by helping them address organizational challenges this year.

More information about the upcoming Facilitation Impact Awards will be announced soon. For now, look back on 2019’s honourees for examples of what we’ll be looking for in our next award winners.

FIA Project Peer Review Publication

Congratulations to IAF's past chair, Kimberly Bain, and her client Coloplast, whose 2017 FIA project has completed the peer review process and has been accepted for publication in the Science Direct Journal.

The article, Strengthening implementation success using large-scale consensus decision-making - A new approach to creating medical practice guidelines, has been made available online for free for the next 50 days here. Afterwards, it will appear in the April 2020 print version of the Journal.  A second article co-authored by Kimberly exploring the medical outcomes of the project has also been accepted for publication in both the British Journal of Nursing and the Journal of Wound Ostomy & Contience Nursing

Kimberly's work is a great testament to the effectiveness of the process of facilitation. By being recognised in these publications, she has further contributed to a greater respect and understanding of the power of facilitation globally.

Conference Updates

2019 Conference of the Americas, Sao Paulo, Brazil - Facilitation in a Complex World

The first truly multilingual conference in IAF history involved nine months of preparation by a five-person organising team and members of the Brazil Chapter, the newest in the Latin America and Caribbean Region. The four Conference Chairs - Gillian Chambers, Beatrice Briggs, Carolina Ribeiro de Almeida and Fernando Murray Loureiro - were supported by Hector Villareal - Conference Director – throughout nine months of collaboration across four time zones. Their work with Brazilian and Portuguese volunteers - namely Celeste Brito and Paulo Nunes - resulted in a beautiful Conference, which attracted 90+ participants from 15 countries, scheduled 25 concurrent sessions, four plenary sessions, and the presentation of two FIA Awards. All this in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Guided by the theme “Facilitation in a Complex World”, participants were able to experience new practices, methods and techniques to enhance their own work, in their own language.

Using a novel translation app during plenary sessions, participants were also able to collaborate during a multicultural retrospective, focus on a session of meditation and mindfulness as well as learn about different engagement strategies during complex times.

One of the key learnings, shared by one of the participants in the retrospective, was that the spirit of facilitation, of bringing people together, of helping others collaborate transcends many barriers, even if two people do not speak the same language.

Another observation was: Complexity is a part of the human experience. We as facilitators work with groups to help them engage in conversations to foster a deeper understanding of the complexity they live in, and to engage in more meaningful and productive ways.

Once again at IAF, volunteerism shines at its best in the Association’s core. By the efforts from many, IAF is connecting more facilitators to a diverse, multilingual, complex and truly amaziing global Community.

We invite you to experience the spirit of this multilingual collaboration yourself with the conference’s closing video below.
