The Myth of Neutrality: Facilitation as a Catalyst for Change Facilitators are often expected to be neutral—calm, steady, guiding conversations without personal investment, like some kind of meeting fairy  godparent. But let’s be honest—none of us are truly neutral. The way we structure conversations shapes who gets heard, who holds power, and whether  anything actually changes.

In this article, I challenge the long-held belief that facilitation is (or should be) neutral. While I don’t push my own opinions on content, I am never neutral on process—because process determines who speaks, whose perspectives shape the outcome, and whether power is shared or reinforced. So, can a facilitator be bold? Angry? Should we? This piece explores the tension between neutrality, advocacy, and the role of facilitators in disrupting the status quo, creating space for deep dialogue, and fostering meaningful change.
